xAI models in Australia
xAI develops the Grok family of models, which power the Grok assistant in the X platform and standalone Grok apps. Grok models cover reasoning, coding, real-time search over web and X content, and image and video generation through Grok Imagine.
Developers can use Grok through the xAI API, Microsoft Foundry and Amazon Bedrock, which brings enterprise billing, identity and logging options. xAI has published weights for some older Grok generations, but its current models are closed and can only be used as a service.
For Australian organisations, the key limitation is data location. None of the documented access routes currently process Grok requests in an Australian region, so Grok is best kept to tasks that do not involve personal, confidential or otherwise regulated information.

Strengths
- +Real-time access to web and X content for current events and social listening
- +Capable reasoning and coding models with long context
- +Available through Microsoft Foundry and Amazon Bedrock as well as xAI's own API
- +Integrated image and video generation
Limitations
- –No Australian processing route on xAI, Azure or Amazon Bedrock
- –xAI's API offers only a global or US regional endpoint
- –Grok's content moderation approach has drawn regulatory scrutiny in several countries
- –Current models are closed, so self-hosting is not an option
Ways to access these models
Grok apps and X
Consumer and business Grok assistants on the web, mobile and inside X.
xAI API
Direct developer access through a global endpoint or a US-only regional endpoint.
Microsoft Foundry
Grok models as Global Standard serverless deployments.
Amazon Bedrock
Grok models via US geographic or global cross-region inference.
Keeping data in Australia
As of October 2026, no verified route processes Grok requests in Australia. xAI's API documents a global endpoint with no location commitment and a US regional endpoint. Microsoft Foundry offers Grok only as Global Standard deployments, which may be processed in any Azure region. Amazon Bedrock lists Grok in Sydney and Melbourne only through global cross-region inference, which can route to any supported commercial AWS region. Oracle Cloud's generative AI service, which also hosts Grok, has no Australian region. If you need onshore processing, use Grok only for non-sensitive tasks such as public research, and choose a model with an Australian route for personal or confidential data. Recheck the Bedrock and Foundry availability tables, as new regions can be added.
For workloads where data must stay onshore end to end, see private AI hosted in Australia.
Best for
- →Monitoring news, trends and public conversation on X
- →Research and ideation using non-sensitive public information
- →Teams experimenting with an alternative frontier model via Azure or AWS

Grok (xAI)
Free plan + paidChatbot
xAI's AI assistant, available at grok.com, in mobile apps and inside X; xAI merged with SpaceX in 2026. It answers questions with access to web and X search, writes and analyses content, and generates images and short videos through its Imagine feature.
Best for: Social media teams monitoring live conversation on X

Free plan + paidDev Infrastructure
A unified API that gives developers access to hundreds of AI models from many providers through one key and an OpenAI-compatible interface. It handles routing, fallbacks when a provider fails, usage tracking and consolidated billing, and lets teams filter providers by data policy, price or speed.
Best for: Developers comparing models before committing to a provider

Frequently asked questions
Can Grok process data in Australia?
Not through any documented route as of late 2026. The xAI API offers global and US endpoints, while Microsoft Foundry and Amazon Bedrock offer Grok to Australian regions only through global routing. Treat Grok as an offshore service for privacy assessments.
Is Grok available on Microsoft Azure and AWS?
Yes. Microsoft Foundry offers Grok models as Global Standard deployments and Amazon Bedrock offers them through US geographic or global cross-region inference. Both give you enterprise billing, identity and logging, but neither keeps processing in Australia.
Are Grok models open source?
xAI has released weights for some older Grok generations, but its current models are closed and available only through xAI's services and cloud partners. Check the licence attached to any released weights before commercial use.
What is Grok best used for in a business?
Grok's access to real-time X and web content makes it useful for monitoring trends, brand mentions and breaking news. Because data is processed offshore, keep personal and confidential information out of prompts unless your privacy assessment supports it.
