Cohere models in Australia

Cohere is a Canadian enterprise AI company focused on business use rather than consumer chat. Its Command models handle generation, tool use and retrieval-augmented generation, while its Embed and Rerank models power search and retrieval, and the Aya family targets multilingual research.

Cohere emphasises deployment flexibility. Its models are available through its own platform, AWS, Azure and Oracle Cloud, and through private deployments in a customer's virtual private cloud or on-premises, including air-gapped environments where no prompts or documents leave the customer's own network.

For Australian organisations, Cohere's Embed models on Amazon Bedrock in Sydney and its private deployment option are the main onshore routes. Private deployment requires a commercial agreement with Cohere and in-house or partner capability to run and maintain the infrastructure.

Strengths

  • +Embedding and reranking models designed for enterprise search and retrieval
  • +Private deployment in your own cloud account or on-premises
  • +Strong multilingual support across Command, Embed and Aya
  • +Business focus, with no consumer product competing for data

Limitations

  • –Command models on Bedrock and Azure are not processed in Australian regions
  • –Research weights are released under a non-commercial licence, so commercial self-hosting requires an agreement with Cohere
  • –Smaller third-party ecosystem than OpenAI, Google or Meta

Ways to access these models

Cohere platform

Cohere's own API and North workspace for enterprise agents and search.

Amazon Bedrock

Command, Embed and Rerank models, with older Embed models in-region in Sydney.

Microsoft Foundry

Command and Rerank models as Global Standard serverless deployments.

Private deployment

Cohere models deployed in your own cloud account or data centre under a commercial agreement.

Keeping data in Australia

Amazon Bedrock lists Cohere's English and multilingual Embed models as available in-Region in Sydney (ap-southeast-2), which suits retrieval systems that must index Australian data onshore. Cohere's newest Embed model is reachable from Sydney and Melbourne only through global cross-region inference, and Command models are not listed in Bedrock's Australian regions. Microsoft Foundry offers Cohere models as Global Standard deployments only, and Oracle's generative AI service has no Australian region. The strongest onshore option for Command models is a private deployment in your own AWS, Azure or Google Cloud account in an Australian region, or on-premises, arranged with Cohere. Confirm Bedrock availability on each model card and ask Cohere to document processing locations in your contract.

For workloads where data must stay onshore end to end, see private AI hosted in Australia.

Best for

  • →Enterprise search and retrieval-augmented generation over internal documents
  • →Organisations needing private or air-gapped deployment
  • →Multilingual retrieval and classification
  • →Adding reranking to an existing search system

    Dev Infrastructure

A Canadian enterprise AI company that builds the Command family of generative models, Embed models for semantic search and Rerank models for retrieval. Its North platform packages these into an agent workspace for staff. Cohere focuses on private deployment, letting organisations run models in their own cloud, on-premises or fully disconnected environments.

Best for: Government and regulated organisations needing models in their own environment

    Dev Infrastructure

A unified API that gives developers access to hundreds of AI models from many providers through one key and an OpenAI-compatible interface. It handles routing, fallbacks when a provider fails, usage tracking and consolidated billing, and lets teams filter providers by data policy, price or speed.

Best for: Developers comparing models before committing to a provider

Frequently asked questions

Can Cohere models run in Australia?

Partly through managed services: Amazon Bedrock lists Cohere's English and multilingual Embed models in-region in Sydney. For Command models, the onshore option is a private deployment in your own Australian cloud account or data centre, arranged with Cohere.

Are Cohere's models open weights?

Cohere has released research weights for some Command and Aya models, but under a non-commercial licence. Commercial use of self-hosted weights requires an agreement with Cohere, typically as part of a private deployment.

What are Embed and Rerank used for?

Embed turns text and images into vectors so a system can find semantically similar content, and Rerank reorders search results by relevance. Together they improve retrieval-augmented generation, where an AI assistant answers questions from your own documents.

How does Cohere differ from OpenAI or Anthropic?

Cohere focuses on enterprise deployments, retrieval and private hosting rather than consumer chat. Its private deployment option lets models run inside your own environment, which OpenAI and Anthropic do not offer for their main closed models.
