OpenAI models in Australia
OpenAI develops the GPT family of language models that power ChatGPT, along with reasoning-focused models, image and audio models, and the gpt-oss open-weight models. OpenAI closed its Sora video app and API in 2026. Its flagship GPT models handle writing, analysis, coding, image understanding and agentic tool use, and are offered in several sizes that trade capability against speed and cost.
Australian organisations can use OpenAI models through ChatGPT business plans, the OpenAI API, Microsoft Foundry on Azure and, since 2026, Amazon Bedrock. The gpt-oss models are released under the Apache 2.0 licence, so they can also be downloaded and run on your own infrastructure.
For data residency, OpenAI offers Australian storage at rest for eligible API and ChatGPT Enterprise customers, but its own services do not yet run inference in Australia. In-country processing depends on choosing the right Azure deployment type or self-hosting gpt-oss.

Strengths
- +Broad model range, from fast low-cost models to deep reasoning models, behind one API
- +Mature developer tooling, including the Responses API, function calling, structured outputs and agent tooling
- +Strong multimodal support across text, images and audio
- +Available through several enterprise channels, including Azure and Amazon Bedrock
- +Open-weight gpt-oss models for workloads that must run on your own hardware
Limitations
- –OpenAI's own API and ChatGPT process inference outside Australia, even when data is stored at rest locally
- –Non-US API data residency requires approval for abuse monitoring controls
- –Newest GPT models usually reach Azure's regional Australian deployments last, if at all
- –On Amazon Bedrock, GPT models are reachable from Australia only through global cross-region inference
Ways to access these models
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu
Workspace apps with admin controls; Enterprise and Edu can select Australian data residency for stored content.
OpenAI API
Direct developer access to GPT, reasoning, image and audio models, with an Australian storage endpoint for approved customers.
Microsoft Foundry (Azure OpenAI)
GPT models with global, APAC data zone, regional standard and regional provisioned deployment types.
Amazon Bedrock
Current GPT models via global cross-region inference from Sydney and Melbourne; gpt-oss runs in-region.
Self-hosted gpt-oss
Download the Apache 2.0 weights and run them on Australian servers with tools such as Ollama or vLLM.
Keeping data in Australia
OpenAI's API data residency lists Australia (au.api.openai.com) with regional storage but no regional processing, and it requires approved abuse monitoring controls. ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu can store content at rest in Australia, but OpenAI's inference residency currently covers the US only. For in-country processing, Microsoft Foundry's Australia East region offers Standard (regional) deployments for a small set of older GPT models and embeddings, and Regional Provisioned deployments for a wider range of GPT models; Data Zone deployments use the multi-country APAC zone instead. On Amazon Bedrock, current GPT models are global-only from Australia, while gpt-oss runs in-region in Sydney and Melbourne. Confirm using Microsoft's region availability tables for the exact model version and deployment type.
For workloads where data must stay onshore end to end, see private AI hosted in Australia.
Best for
- →General-purpose assistants and copilots that need strong writing, analysis and tool use
- →Teams already on Microsoft Azure who can use regional or provisioned deployments
- →Multimodal products combining text, images and audio
- →Self-hosted workloads that suit the open-weight gpt-oss models
Tools built on OpenAI models
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Free plan + paidGeneral Assistant
OpenAI's general-purpose AI assistant. It handles writing, coding, file and image analysis, data analysis and web research through a chat interface, with an API for building it into your own systems.
Best for: Small and mid-sized teams wanting one general assistant for everyday writing and analysis
ChatGPT review →Codex (OpenAI)
Free plan + paidCoding Assistant
OpenAI's coding agent for writing, reviewing and fixing code. It runs locally through the Codex CLI, IDE extension and desktop app, and in the cloud, where it works on tasks in parallel sandboxes and proposes pull requests. Access comes with ChatGPT plans or through an OpenAI API key.
Best for: Teams already paying for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise
Codex review →General Assistant
Microsoft's AI assistant for work, built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams and available through the Copilot app. It drafts, summarises and analyses using the emails, files, chats and meetings each user can already access, and includes agents such as Researcher and Analyst for deeper tasks. Microsoft now brands the app simply as Microsoft Copilot.
Best for: Organisations already standardised on Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise plans
Microsoft 365 Copilot review →OpenRouter
Free plan + paidDev Infrastructure
A unified API that gives developers access to hundreds of AI models from many providers through one key and an OpenAI-compatible interface. It handles routing, fallbacks when a provider fails, usage tracking and consolidated billing, and lets teams filter providers by data policy, price or speed.
Best for: Developers comparing models before committing to a provider

Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT store data in Australia?
Eligible ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers can choose Australia as their data residency region, which keeps stored content such as conversations, files and custom GPTs at rest in Australia. Model processing still happens outside Australia, because OpenAI's inference residency option currently covers only the United States.
Can the OpenAI API process requests in Australia?
Not through OpenAI directly. The Australian API endpoint provides regional storage, but OpenAI's documentation marks regional processing as unavailable for Australia. To process GPT requests onshore, use a supported Standard or Regional Provisioned deployment in Microsoft Foundry's Australia East region, or self-host the gpt-oss open-weight models.
Is Azure OpenAI's APAC data zone the same as Australian residency?
No. Azure's Data Zone deployments keep processing within a Microsoft-defined multi-country Asia Pacific zone, which can include regions outside Australia. Only Standard (regional) and Regional Provisioned deployment types process prompts within the Australian geography, and they support fewer model versions.
Are OpenAI's models open source?
Most are not. GPT models in ChatGPT and the API are closed and accessed as a service. The gpt-oss models are an exception: OpenAI publishes their weights under the Apache 2.0 licence, so you can run them on your own servers or through cloud platforms that host them in Australian regions.
