Comparison

Claude vs Google Gemini: which is right for your business?

Choose Claude for careful analysis of long documents, high-quality writing and serious coding work, especially if you run on AWS and want processing in Sydney through Bedrock. Choose Gemini if your business lives in Google Workspace and wants AI built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Meet, or needs image, video and audio generation alongside text. Both exclude business data from training on organisational plans. Many Workspace businesses use Gemini for everyday tasks and add Claude for contract review, policy work or software development.

For Australian businesses

Both tools come from US companies billed in US dollars, though Workspace can be bought in Australian dollars through local resellers. For Privacy Act 1988 compliance, use business plans, which exclude your data from training, and set a written policy for personal and client information. Claude offers a clearer path to onshore processing through AWS Bedrock in Sydney. Gemini in Workspace does not yet offer Australian data region controls, although custom builds on Google Cloud can run in Sydney or Melbourne for some models.

Our verdict

Gemini is the sensible default for Google Workspace businesses because it is often already licensed and sits inside daily tools. Claude is the better choice when the work is document-heavy or technical, such as legal review, policy analysis, tender writing or software development, where output quality matters more than convenience. If you are not on Workspace, Claude is usually the more capable standalone assistant for professional writing and analysis, while Gemini's main draw outside Workspace is its image, video and multimodal features.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude with Google Workspace?

Yes. Claude has connectors for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive, so it can search and read your Workspace content when you allow it. It does not sit inside Docs or Gmail the way Gemini does, so staff work in the Claude app and bring results back into Workspace.

Which is better for long documents?

Both handle long documents well. Claude is often preferred for careful analysis and comparison of contracts, policies and tenders, with structured, well-reasoned answers. Gemini handles very large inputs too and can read directly from Drive. Test both on one of your own long documents before choosing.

Which offers Australian data residency?

Claude models can be processed in Australian regions through AWS Bedrock and Google Cloud, depending on the model. Gemini models can run in Google Cloud's Sydney and Melbourne regions for custom builds, but Workspace data region controls for Gemini cover the US and Europe only. Confirm current model and region availability before you commit.
