Comparison

ChatGPT vs Claude: which is right for your business?

Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant that covers the widest spread of everyday tasks, including image generation, voice, custom GPTs and a large app ecosystem. Choose Claude if your work centres on long documents, careful writing and coding, where it handles large contracts, policies and codebases in a single conversation. Both offer business plans that exclude your data from model training by default. On data residency, ChatGPT Enterprise can store data at rest in Australia, while Claude's route to Australian processing is through AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud.

For Australian businesses

Under the Privacy Act 1988, the risk with either tool is staff pasting personal information into personal accounts. Use a business plan, set a written usage policy and record which data each tool may receive. Both vendors bill in US dollars, so budget for exchange-rate movement. ChatGPT Enterprise can keep data at rest in Australia; for Claude, organisations needing onshore processing usually go through AWS Bedrock in Sydney. Regulated sectors such as financial services under APRA CPS 230 should treat either as a material service provider and assess it accordingly.

Our verdict

For most Australian small businesses wanting a single general assistant, ChatGPT is the safer default because it covers images, voice, data analysis and writing in one place. For professional services, legal, policy and software teams whose work is mostly long documents or code, Claude is the stronger choice and often needs less editing. Larger organisations commonly license both: ChatGPT for broad staff use and Claude for document-heavy or engineering work. Decide data residency first, as that may settle the choice before features do.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for reviewing contracts?

Claude is generally the better fit for long contracts because it handles very large documents in one conversation and tends to give careful, structured analysis. ChatGPT also reads contracts well. Either way, treat the output as a first review only, and have a qualified person check anything with legal consequences before relying on it.

Can I keep ChatGPT or Claude data in Australia?

ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu and eligible API customers can store data at rest in Australia, though OpenAI notes processing may still happen offshore. Anthropic's own API currently offers US or global processing, so organisations needing Australian processing for Claude generally use AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud regions in Australia, checking which models each region offers.

Do ChatGPT and Claude train on my business data?

Not on business plans by default. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and Claude Team and Enterprise, exclude your content from model training, as do both APIs. Consumer plans are different: users must check and set the training preference themselves, which is why staff should not use personal accounts for work.

Which is better for coding?

Both are capable. Claude is widely preferred for working across large codebases and offers Claude Code for agentic tasks in the terminal and editor. ChatGPT offers the Codex agent and strong chat-based help. Trial both on a real task from your own repository before committing a team licence.
