AI customer support tools for Australian businesses

AI customer support tools answer customer questions across chat, email, social messaging and sometimes voice, and help human agents with suggested replies, summaries and ticket routing. Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI and Ada target mid-sized and large service teams, Gorgias is built around ecommerce, and Tidio suits small online businesses.

Through 2025 and 2026 support AI moved from scripted chatbots to agents that resolve issues by reading help centre content and acting in connected systems, such as checking an order, issuing a refund within limits or updating a booking. Several vendors moved to pricing per resolved conversation, which makes measuring what counts as a resolution an important part of any contract.

In Australia these tools are used by online retailers handling delivery and returns questions, software companies supporting customers across time zones, utilities, telcos and insurers managing high volumes, and councils and universities answering common enquiries. A good help centre is the foundation; AI agents are only as accurate as the content they draw on.

How to choose

Fit with your help desk

If you already run Zendesk, Intercom or Gorgias, the built-in AI agent has the least integration work. Standalone agents such as Ada suit complex, multi-system environments. Moving help desks for AI alone is rarely worth the disruption.

Knowledge quality and testing

Audit your help centre before launch: outdated policies become confident wrong answers. Choose a tool that lets you test against real past conversations, see which sources each answer used and block topics the agent should never handle.

Actions and limits

Agents that can issue refunds or change accounts need clear limits, identity checks and logs. Start with information-only answers, then add actions one at a time with thresholds, such as refunds under a set amount, and review the results.

Escalation to people

Customers should reach a person easily, with the conversation history passed across. Check how the tool detects frustration, complaints and vulnerable customers, and how handover works outside business hours.

Resolution-based pricing

When you pay per resolution, understand exactly how the vendor counts one, and whether a customer who gives up counts as resolved. Track your own resolution and recontact rates so you can check the bill.

What Australian businesses should check

AI agents must not mislead customers about their rights. Under the Australian Consumer Law, statutory rights to refunds, repairs and replacements cannot be excluded, so test answers on returns and warranty questions carefully. Tell customers when they are dealing with AI. Support conversations often contain personal information covered by the Privacy Act 1988. Intercom offers Australian regional hosting for new workspaces, and Zendesk can host most data in Australia, although its advanced AI agents are hosted in the US or EU. Regulated sectors such as financial services and telecommunications have complaint-handling standards, including ASIC's RG 271, that AI workflows must respect.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI customer service tool is best for an Australian online store?

Gorgias is built for Shopify and similar platforms, with order lookups and ecommerce actions. Tidio suits smaller stores wanting simple live chat with an AI agent. Larger retailers with multiple channels often choose Zendesk or Intercom. Test each on your top twenty customer questions, especially delivery and returns.

Can customer support AI keep data in Australia?

Partly. Intercom offers Australian hosting if chosen when the workspace is created, and Zendesk offers Australian data hosting for most services, but some AI features process data in the US or EU. Ask each vendor for a data flow showing where conversations, AI processing and backups sit.

Do I have to tell customers they are chatting with AI?

There is no single Australian law requiring it in every case, but implying a human is responding could be misleading under the Australian Consumer Law, and the OAIC recommends transparency about AI use. Labelling the agent clearly and offering a route to a person is the safer and more trusted approach.

How accurate are AI support agents?

Accuracy depends mostly on your help content and how narrowly the agent is configured. Agents answer well from clear, current articles and struggle with policies that exist only in staff heads. Review a sample of conversations weekly, fix gaps in your content and expand the agent's scope gradually.
